Forrest David Mathews was born on December 6, 1935 in Grove Hill, Alabama. He taught history at various colleges and universities, and became one of the youngest men ever to head a major university when he was named president of the University of Alabama in 1969. On June 26, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford nominated Mathews to succeed Casper Weinberger as Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW).
